Differences Between Denatured And Non-Denatured Ethanol?

Ethanol, also known as ethyl alcohol, is an organic compound. It is made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms. The chemical formula of ethanol is C2H5OH. It is a clear, colourless, and flammable liquid. It is highly volatile in nature.

Ethanol exists in a wide range of concentrations, purity, and grades.

Different Grades of Ethanol:

· Absolute ethanol (99-100%)

· 95% of ethanol

· Denatured ethanol (either 95% or absolute)

Usages of Ethanol:

· Preparation of alcohol beverages such as beer, whiskey, and wine

· Engine fuel for vehicles

· Solvent for paints, perfumes, deodorants, and varnishes

· Preservation of biological specimens in the laboratory

· Antiseptic and disinfectant

· Cough syrups

· Industrial production of acetic acid, chloroform, and diethyl ether

Considering the benefits offered by ethanol, it is an important organic compound.

There are two main types of ethanol in the chemical market. These are:

· Denatured ethanol alcohol

· Non-denatured alcohol

What is Denatured Alcohol?

Denatured ethanol alcohol is a form of alcohol, which is denatured by the addition of denaturants or additives. The denaturants make this type of ethanol poisonous and unfit for consumption. The most commonly used additive to denature ethanol is 5 % or 10% methanol. Other denaturants like isopropanol and pyridine are also used to denature ethyl alcohol. Denatured ethanol alcohol is bitter to taste.

Sometimes a dye is also added to denatured ethanol alcohol in order to differentiate it from non-denatured ethanol. In the denaturation process, there is no change or alteration in the chemical structure of ethanol. There is no decomposition, too. Denaturation is mainly carried out to make ethanol importable.

The taxes on denatured ethanol alcohol is less, hence it is cheaper in comparison to non-denatured ethanol.

Denatured ethanol procured from a denatured ethanol supplier in Gujarat is used in the manufacture of hand sanitizers, too. This is because denatured ethanol alcohol is an effective disinfectant against both enveloped and non-enveloped viruses. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, denatured ethanol suppliers in Gujarat have witnessed a tremendous demand for denatured ethanol.

What is Non-Denatured Ethanol?

Non-denatured ethanol is the pure form of ethanol having at least 95% of ethanol content. It does not contain any denaturants or additives. It is also known as undenatured ethanol, absolute ethanol, 95% ethanol, and pure ethanol. 95% ethanol means 95 ml of ethanol per 100 ml of water.

Unlike denatured ethanol sold by a denatured ethanol supplier in Gujarat, which is bitter in taste, non-denatured ethanol is sweet to taste. It has a characteristic alcoholic odour. Absolute ethanol, also known as purified ethanol, is the purest form of ethanol containing not more than one percent water. Non-denatured ethanol is safe for human consumption since there are no additives present.

Non-denatured ethanol is expensive compared to denatured ethanol alcohol sold by denatured ethanol suppliers in Gujarat. The main reason behind this is the taxes, which apply to non-denatured ethanol.
